Strings, Song & Steel

The Violin, the Voice and the SteelPan

As for the concert/recital “Strings Song and Steel” itself, Oliver
Lewis gave dazzling performances of works written or arranged by
Fritz Kreisler, by Bloch, Wieniawski and Sarasate. The duet
between violin and pan in Vivaldi’s “Winter” from “The Four
Seasons” was most impressive.

I’d begun to wonder what had happened to Natalia Dopwell’s
excellent diction, sometimes coming across crystal clear, at other
times, muffled until one more, well-versed in such things as I,
pointed out that it was more likely the placing of the microphones
sticking up in front of the stage, than the singer herself who was at
fault.

Liam Teague has no equal as a classical pannist, one need say
no more. Dr Jeffrey Middleton was the accompanist par excellence,
keeping the three elements of strings, song and steel together,
never obtruding, always there when needed.

Personally, I found the programme something of a disappointment
— save and except the highlights of Vivaldi’s “Winter”, the Mozart
and Kreisler. After the brilliance of Sarasate’s “Zapateado” in the
second half of the programme, we came down to earth with a
bump as Oliver and Natalia played and sang Eidelweiss while,
however good, the jazz session at the end completely erased
memories of soaring violin cadenzas, and Natalia’s lovely voice.
