Classical Foundation celebrates 1st Anniversary
By Sean Nero

The outfit known as the Classical Music Development Foundation
of T&T (CMDFTT) knows how to throw a party without employing the
services of a DJ.

Celebrating its first anniversary on June 16, the outfit brought
together four of the world’s most talented entertainers, who created
the right mix of moods at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s.

T&T’s pan prodigy Liam Teague, lyric soprano Natalia Dopwell
accomplished American pianist Dr Jeff Middleton and British
violinist Oliver Lewis formed the cast that delivered simply
satisfying performances to mark the occasion in a production titled
Strings, Song & Steel.

Winter from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons; Mascagni’s Ave Maria; and
Gershwin’s Summertime were among the selections performed by
the marvellous quartet.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who was in Washington DC, for a
conference on the weekend of the show, was its patron.

Annette Dopwell, director of the music outfit, said its mission is “to
encourage and nurture excellence in present and future
generations of classical artistes. So we are here with another
production this year, including our own indigenous steelpan and
performed by Trinidad’s world-renowned musician Liam Teague.”

Citing that music greatly improves the quality of life, the foundation
believes that alone should ensure music’s place among the
basics in the education in every young person.

“We offered two matinee performances for schools as we are
concerned about the lack of exposure to classical music for
children.”

Most secondary and primary schools responded positively to that
invitation. More than 30 schools were able to participate.

“We are proud to report that with this anniversary we have included
master classes for advanced students of pan, violin and piano with
our visiting professionals.”
