The Holistic Music School
Dr. Patricia Dardaine-Ragguet
Director - Holistic Music School
Holistic Music School was established in September, 2002 by Dr.
Patricia Dardaine-Ragguet (director and teacher). As the name
suggests, the school’s curriculum and underlying philosophy on
education are holistic, that is, students are instructed in several
fundamental and interrelated areas.
The curriculum includes:
- music performance (piano, pan, recorder, cuatro, guitar,
percussion and voice)
- music appreciation (classical, jazz and other local/
international genres)
- music theory.
The main goals of the programme are to help students (pre-
schoolers to adults) understand and enjoy music both individually
and socially. Students are taught that music is a fundamentally
important part of our culture. They also learn how to express
themselves through music. Music examinations (practical and
theory) are optional.
At Holistic Music School, education is viewed as a holistic
endeavour. Therefore, the music curriculum is built to support
other subjects such as reading, mathematics, creative writing,
science and social studies. This holistic approach is supported
by several educators and researchers internationally who report
that curriculum achievement in academics improve when the arts
form an integral part of the curriculum.
The music programme offered at Holistic Music School links its
teaching/learning processes to three broad instructional domains
or areas, i.e., cognitive (recall and recognition of knowledge),
affective (values and value systems) and psychomotor (physical
and mental coordination). Music promotes learning in all three
domains. Instruction in these areas (holistic instruction)
contributes to producing well rounded students.
